Tony Cano On WBMXTony Cano was born and raised on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, USA.  His love for music began at an early age while watching his father play music at family parties.  He started collecting records in 1979 and shortly thereafter, he began to play at events for family and friends using just two stereo consoles side by side. While mixing was not so prevalent, he learned the appreciation for music selection and reading the dance floor during this period.

In 1982, Tony obtained his first real DJ equipment and began to master the art of the blend. His popularity as a DJ grew among his circle of friends and school mates. During this time, Tony began to play private and school sponsored events.

In 1989, Tony became the resident DJ at Coconuts Night Club.  Coconuts Night Club was a legendary night club in House Music History who’s former resident DJs included Frankie Knuckles, Armando, Lil Louis, and Jungle Jorge. Tony went on to become the resident DJ at Casanova’s, Erik’s North, China Club, and Shadow’s Night Club throughout the 90’s.

In the late 90’s, Tony launched his own house music based web site called “WWW.GottaHaveHouse.Com”.  This website was instrumental in exposing many talented DJs from around the world to a global audience and became an outlet for introducing modern soul music to the masses as well. Tony, along with his brother Frank, and friends from around the globe posted weekly mixes to the website to the delight of an audience around the world.

As is the natural progression for many DJ’s, Tony turned Producer and Remixer in 1994 when he collaborated with his good friend Reggie Rodgers on a track called “Deeper – Cano Bros” by Random Access on Relief Records.  From there Tony and Reggie went on to release “Keep Thinkin” by Soul Foundation on Vinyl Soul.  Tony went on to remix “Seduce Me Now” by La India on Jellybean Recordings and Sony Records and remixed “Sunshine” by Georgie Porgie on Music Plant Records. Many of these records were promoted nationally and reached the top of the Billboard Club Charts.

January 9th, 2011 was proclaimed House DJ Day in Chicago.  Tony was named among the 100 pioneering DJs who made major contributions to House Music Culture. As part of the celebration, a historic photo shoot took place to immortalize these DJs known as “The DJ Architects Of House Music”. Among those in the photo shoot were Frankie Knuckles, Lil Louis, Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, Terry Hunter, Mike Dunn, Steve Hurley, and many others.

Today, Tony continues to live and breathe House Music as he has done from his early years.  He continues to produce music under the name “Kanomarli” on I Am House / Music Plant Records and have recently released a single “Steady Rock”. Tony is currently a resident DJ on “Saturday Night Live Ain’t No Jive Chicago Dance Party” that airs every Saturday on WCKG 92.3 FM and WBMX.COM
