70’s TV Shows

70’s TV Shows, there were so many of them back in the day. Many of us as kids during the week in Chicago woke up to Ray Rayner, Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Romper Room, Zoom, Electric Company, The Funny Company, Bozo’s Circus (would eventually move to lunch time), Sesame Street, Garfield Goose & Friends or BJ And Dirty Dragon which eventually became syndicated and called Gigglesnort Hotel with many of the same characters.

Saturdays were the big day! Cartoons all morning long with the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour, Speed Buggy, Great Grape Ape, Shazam/Isis Hour, Hong Kong Phooey, Scooby Doo, Hudson Brothers, Sid & Marty Kroft and more including a show that Walter Payton, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar could be seen before we knew them all on Soul Train. There was also American Bandstand.

Sundays were kind of out there but many of use would watch that show with the weird little dude dressed in leotards with his ukulele, sitting in a mushroom tree singing “Open, Come Open The Magic Door With Me’. Jubilee Showcase, Bob Luce Wrestling,

Other shows and features we grew up with included The Funny Company, The Banana Splits, The Electric Company, Creature Features, The Gong Show, The 1.98 Beauty Pageant, The New Treasure Hunt, Gilligan’s Island, Magilla Gorilla, Peter Potomus and SoSo, Yippe, Yappee and Yahooee, Richochet Rabbit, Dudley Do Right, Dance Fever and more.

We had channels 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 that most of could watch with just the usual antenna, it was 26, 32 and 44 that took the round antenna to be able to watch. Many of us grew up with Black and White tv sets, our Saturday Morning cartoons looked so much better in color!

ON TV was our first foray into ‘paid tv’ with one whole channel that many of us watched. There was also SPECTRUM and others before Chicago finally had cable in the late 80’s.
